KREISWERK.1 - Audiovisual Installation

Kreiswerk1 is an audiovisual Installation by Stefan Kraus and Marc Sauter. The artwork was commissioned by the media art biennale Pochen, the Sächsisches Eisenbahnmuseum Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf e.V. und the Industriekultur Chemnitz Initiative and is on display during September and October 2020. The idea was to confront the fascinating nostalgia in the historic trainyard with contemporary media art. With this work, we try to make some of the hidden aspects of railway work hear- and visible. Some of them obvious like the noise that trains and machinery used to make, others more ephemeral like the ubiquitous steam and and the complex control centers hidden from passengers and landscape alike.

The museum is organised by a private club and many retired railway enthusiasts help out, repairing trains and guiding visitors around the former depot and it's vast collection of trains. until recently it has been mainly a collection, but a recently opened exhibition attracts new visitors and adds some explanation to the historic artefacts that impress with their dimensions and the characteristic smell of oil and steel.
